Honolulu Marathon 2025: together, on purpose
Start together, finish together, take every aid station, and enjoy the fireworks. 5:25:08 and 5:25:08.
This was our fourth Honolulu Marathon in a row, and it was the first one we ran as one race instead of two. It came six weeks after a full Ironman, so there was no PR to chase and neither of us pretended there was. I went into it injured, and we decided to run the whole thing together at whatever pace the injury allowed, which made the plan the simplest one we've ever written: start together, finish together, take every aid station, and enjoy the fireworks. Whose day was it? It was both of ours for once, and the pace was whatever kept it that way. That was a decision we made for my body on that day, and if anybody is weighing the same one, that's a conversation for their own doctor and not for this page.
We finished in 5:25:08 and 5:25:08, places 7802 and 7803. He's one place ahead of me on the sheet, and I'm choosing not to have feelings about that. (I have a few, and Jay knows about all of them.)
If you only look at the times on this site you'll see this as the slow one, and it was the best one! I got twenty-six miles next to Jay, every aid station, and the fireworks, which is exactly what the plan said.
Jay ran a 50K six days later, and that one is his to explain.
