Spartan Beast, Mokuleia 2024: the 20K with walls
Twelve miles of North Shore hills with obstacles on them, four hours and forty-three minutes by our watches, and a shoulder I'm still nursing from an eight-foot wall.
We did something crazy in 2024 besides the 70.3 in the wind. The Spartan Beast is the long one, 20 kilometers with obstacles, and the 2024 edition was at Mokuleia on the North Shore, a week after the 15K and a week before I rode around the island. Our watches say a little under four hours and forty-three minutes from start to finish, and my memory says about five hours, which tells you what the last hour felt like.
It's a 12-mile hike up and down North Shore hills with walls, ropes, carries, and mud between the hills. We stayed together the whole way. Somewhere in there I went over an eight-foot wall and hurt my left shoulder, and I'm still nursing that injury two years later. It hasn't healed all the way yet. That's a story for another page.
The Beast was one third of a Trifecta, which is the three Spartan distances in one calendar year. We got the other two in Nashville in October, the Super and the Sprint, after Hurricane Helene canceled the race we'd actually flown out for.
